Laurie Levine – Cape Town Tour Dates December:

Laurie Levine`s new album “Six Winters” (Rhythm Records) has been receiving rewarding reviews since its release in August 2011. Producer Dan Roberts, who worked with Laurie on her previous album as well, found a balance between a contemporary sound and Laurie`s love of folk music. The combination of Laurie’s characteristic songwriting and Dan Roberts` unique engineering and dedicated production flair is cutting new territory and could very well head up a new movement leading us towards a rekindled appreciation of the power and the role in society of female story telling through music.

Journalist Henry Cloete, MK online, comments: “Levine sings alternately with the seductive suppleness of a Norah Jones, the emotional devastation of a Duffy, the poetic conviction of a Regina Spektor and the doggedness of Fiona Apple. From the sixteenth second of the album – when Levine’s voice announces itself – you’re caught up in the tales and anecdotes of Laurie Levine. Ritalin for the soul.”

Radio Kalahari Orkes releases Movie on DVD and Grootste Treffers

Radio Kalahari Orkes – Launch of new film on DVD and Grootste Treffers CD

(Rhythm Records)

Far from resting on their laurels, the members of the Radio Kalahari Orkes have been burning the midnight oil making movies and broadcasting music till the cows come home. They’ve been collaborating with Valiant Swart and Chris Chameleon and even left the farm for a while to join Jack Parow at Oppikoppi 2010. Don’t believe us? There’s proof – in the form of a brand new film, DIE GEHEIM VAN SLANGFONTEIN“, and CD, RADIO KALAHARI ORKES – GROOTSTE TREFFERS“.

Die Geheim van Slangfontein DVD (in music stores nationwide November)

Radio Kalahari Orkes - Die Geheim Van Slangfontein

Radio Kalahari Orkes - Die Geheim Van Slangfontein

“Die Geheim van Slangfontein” follows the adventures of Rian ‘Rooi Jan’ Malan, a city boy who escapes to the Kalahari to forget himself, his soul-destroying job and his terrible marriage, as well as the great big mess the corrupt government has made of his country.

Unexpectedly, just when he needed silence the most, Rian’s radio refuses to turn off, instead broadcasting music from a mysterious source located between our world and the next. “Spookradio” is a radio station in the Kalahari and one can only hear it if you are tuned into something other than the obvious. The music that emanates from the radio is the Radio Kalahari Orkes` tapestry of distinctive sounds: tin guitars, harmonicas, banjos, mandolins, violins, accordion – earthy, honest and back to the roots.

Rian decides to do the honourable thing and vows to unearth the great secret of the whereabouts of the “Spookradio.” Will he succeed in finding the answers to the questions that eat at this soul? How deep will he need to dig? Will his salvation remain forever out of reach? And will Oom Willie Leopold’s deadly mampoer prove to kickstart the revelation he seeks?

In episode 2 , Rian and the Radio Kalahari Orkes set off to Oppikoppi Festival (2010) for their performance there, also with guest artist Jack Parow. Low down bosveld rock and roll merges effortlessly with RKO`s vibe. The footage is funny and endearing and makes one grin with a little personal Oppikoppi nostalgia. Good times!

Die geheim van Slangfontein” takes you on a journey into the Radio Kalahari Orkes` cult- consciousness. A must see for fans and anyone that would like to come along for the ride. (DVD release, available in music stores nationwide November 2011.)

Tune in.

See the trailer for “Die Geheim van Slangfontein” here:

The DVD includes:

1. Episode 1 – Die Geheim van Slangfontein – Die Kalahari-soektog.

2. Episode 2 – Die Geheim van Slangfontein – RKO gaan Oppikoppi toe.

Grootste Treffers CD

Radio Kalahari Orkes - Grootste Treffers

Radio Kalahari Orkes - Grootste Treffers

Radio Kalahari Orkes has established themselves as favourites in the S.A musical landscape through a series of hits (“Kaptein Kaptein”, “Staan My By”) and top selling albums (“Opgestook” and “Heuningland”). The band is currently very active on the performance circuit and with enigmatic actor and TV personality Ian Roberts as lead singer and world renowned writer Rian Malan as co-composer and lyricist, the public demand for the band is still on the rise. Resulting from high profile public demand for their back catalogue of songs, this “greatest hits” album will be a sure winner. The CD contains most of the songs used in the sound track of the film starring the RKO band.

Finding out that this is straight outta South Africa was something of an incongruous revelation and for a couple listens it felt somewhat disingenuous until I slapped my senses and just reveled in the textures, without a locale in mind. In that headspace, Six Winters is a startling accomplishment – impeccable production, sweeping song-writing and an often sublime capability to transport the listener. This coming from a veteran of the metal scene communicates buckets. Take a listen, people!James Rose – Mathew, Muse Magazine.

Rhythm Records new release: Laurie Levine – Six Winters

Laurie Levine - Six Winters

Laurie Levine - Six Winters

Laurie Levine`s voice fuses childlike playfulness with maturity, a combination that evokes a wide range of emotions; a voice that is simply unique in its ability to engage the listener. Laurie’s catchy folk tunes are reminiscent of what you’d expect to be coming from world class contemporary folk acts the likes of Katie Melua, Lucinda Williams, Alison Krauss, Diana Krall and Emmylou Harris.

Laurie Levine`s third album “Six Winters” has just been released through Rhythm Records. Laurie`s blend of American roots music and the ‘Nu-Folk’ sound has earned her critical acclaim and a growing audience. She has twice been nominated for a SAMA (South African Music Award) in the Adult Contemporary category and she has just returned from the Grahamstown Arts Festival with a Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award for her performances there.

Six Winters” sets a new benchmark on the South African scene for production standards, arrangement and songwriting in the female vocal genre. The combination of Laurie’s characteristic songwriting and producer Dan Roberts` unique engineering and dedicated production flair is cutting new territory and could very well head up a new movement leading us towards a rekindled appreciation of the power and the role in society of female story telling through music.

Dan Roberts, who worked with Laurie on her previous album as well, found a balance between a contemporary sound and Laurie`s love of folk music. Dan speaks about the way they found the ‘voice’ of the album: “Laurie arrived with a selection of songs that had taken her writing to a new level, more exposed and lyrically the strongest set I’ve heard from her so far. There’s a lot of pain there, but extraordinary beauty too. Laurie had also been listening to some old sounds, early dust bowl depression era and such, but at the same time we both love contemporary electronica, so we settled on what can be best described as a: ‘the future is yesterday’ approach. We put together a string ensemble: violin, cello, mandolin, banjo, baritone guitar, junk shop autoharps, accordion and piano and threw that into the ring with, what is known in the trade as: ‘retro electronica beats’ – added some real percussion and ended up with a kind of Appalachian – loop station approach. There’s a pulse there, but a delicacy too. I’m really happy with where we ended up and I hope it gets the airing it deserves.”

The songs on “Six Winters” were created in a deeply personal space and the album was written over the length of a year. Laurie comments on the writing process: “A lot of the songs came to me in pieces that were put together and completed over a period of time. A song is only finished when it is ready and often it takes you by the hand and leads you to its completion. The process is mysterious and hard to grasp, but you have to let the song speak its truth. “

Laurie’s recordings have been supported by a strong live presence for the last few years, predominantly in and around South Africa, but also in recent years outside of the country. In 2009 she performed at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. She opened for Rodriguez in London, and for Joe Jackson in South Africa. She has also performed at some of South Africa’s premier music events and festivals, including, amongst others: Oppikoppi, the Joy of Jazz Festival, Splashy Fen, Levis Vintage Sundays, Mr Price Pro, the White Mountain Folk Festival and FORR Music Festival in Mozambique.

Six Winters” is a beautiful album that has a knack of creeping in under one`s skin. Layered with a fresh flow of emotions and musical intelligence, this album is a jewel of a find.

Laurie Levine will introduce the album at official CD Launches in Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria and Johannesburg:

Laurie Levine new album “Six Winters”

Rhythm Records new release: Laurie Levine – Six Winters:
